The tilde is the mark (˜) that is most often seen sitting over the letter 'n' (as in Spanish señor, meaning "sir," and mañana, "tomorrow"), where it indicates a blend of the sound of 'n' and 'y.'In Portuguese, it may appear over 'a' or 'o,' as in São Paulo, and indicates nasality in pronunciation.. The diacritic's name is a 19th-century borrowing from a Spanish word that . Spanish pronunciation is fairly straight-forward, because there are regular rules for the pronunciation of each letter and letter combination, with very few exceptions. Most letters represent a single sound, though the pronunciation of some letters depends on the location of the letter in the word and the letters beside it.

As a Spanish student it is important to recognise the importance of the "tilde" (i.e the orthografic accent [´]) that we see written above the vowels on some words. Not only do they tell you where the word must be stressed when it is pronounced but in some cases, the presence or absence of a written accent can change the meaning of a word.   Pronouncing Spanish based on the written word is much simpler than pronouncing English based on written English. This is because, with few exceptions, each letter in the Spanish alphabet represents a single sound, and even when there are several possible sounds, simple rules tell us which is the correct one.
